(08/02/12) Todays Classic Cafe Video of the Day–Transvision Vamp & Baby I Don’t Care

Formed in 1986 as a duo featuring lead singer Wendy James and lead guitarist Nick Christian Sayer Transvision Vamp enjoyed in the late 80’s with hits like “I Want Your Love”, “Revolution Baby” & “Baby I Don’t Care”.

After finding success in the United States, Australia and at home in the UK the band had a falling out with their record company over the release of their third album which was finally released following the bands decision to split in 1992. Wendy James went on to have a limited solo success and Dave Parsons went on to play bass guitar for UK rock outfit bush.

In 1978 John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John lead the cast of Grease into the record books for one of the most popular musical film adaptions of all time. In the early 90’s Grease was once again back on the charts thanks to a megamix of all of the hits from the movie soundtrack.

(06/02/12) Todays Classic Cafe Video of the Day–ABBA & The Winner Takes it All.

ABBA are considered to be one of the most commercially successful acts in pop history having sold over 200 million albums worldwide. In 1999 it was rumoured the group were offered one billion dollars to reform and play a one off concert to celebrate the start of the year 2000.

They were pioneers in the use of promotional videos to gain worldwide exposure rather than tours and ironically thanks to support from Molly Meldrum on the TV show “Countdown” Australia was one of the first countries to embrace the music of ABBA.

(03/02/12) Today’s Classic Cafe Video of the Day–The Pointer Sisters & Automatic

Formed in the early 70’s and signed to Atlantic Records in 1972 The Pointer Sisters were initially a quartet until 1978 when they became a trio. A majority of the groups success came during the early 80’s with hits like “Neutron Dance”, “Slow Hand”, “Fire”, “Jump” and “I’m So Excited”.

The group still tours to this day and were recently in Hobart as part of their Australian tour.

In 1968 The Beatles decided to explore new territories and experiment in film with an animated movie “Yellow Submarine”. Played by actors the ‘real’ Beatles only made an appearance in the films closing scene which featured the movies title track.

(01/02/12) Today’s Classic Cafe Video of the Day–Bob Seger & Shakedown

Bob Seger has been performing professionally since 1961 and at one time was even a member of Eric Clapton’s backing band in the early 1970’s. After limited solo success Bob formed The Silver Bullet Band and the rest as they say is history. Becoming a massive drawcard at stadium shows across the United States and collaborating with other bands like The Eagles Seger had his peak success between 1976 and 1987.

Just like the use of “Old TIme Rock and Roll” on the soundtrack to the Tom Cruise film “Risky Business” in 1987 Bob Seger contributed “Shakedown” to the hugely successful Eddie Murphy vehicle “Beverly Hills Cop II”.

(31/01/12) Today’s Classic Cafe Video of the Day–Pet Shop Boys & West End Girls

The Pet Shop Boys formed in the UK in 1981 and were named the most successful British duo in by the Guinness  Book of Records after selling over 100 million records worldwide.

Capitalising on the emerging use of synthesisers, electronic drum machines and digital recording techniques Neil Tennant & Chris Lowe are considered pioneers by other proponents of dance/pop music and still perform & record to this day including a recent appearance in Australia to help celebrate New Years Eve last month in Sydney.

(30/01/12) Today’s Classic Cafe Video of the Day–Robert Palmer & Bad Case of Loving You.

Robert Palmer may have left us in 2003 following a heart attack in France but his music lives on. He was signed to a solo recording contract to Island Records in 1974 following a number of years spent in various bands but it wasn’t until 1979 when “Bad Case of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor) was released that he found international stardom thanks to the song becoming a major hit in the United States.

Palmer enjoyed a number of hits throughout the 80’s & 90’s including time spent on a side project featuring members of “Duran Duran” and “Chic” called “Power Station” named after the New York recording studio.
